FAI Backs Motion Calling for Uefa Ban on Israeli Teams

Ireland's football governing body has given the green light to present a official proposal to European football's governing body, demanding the exclusion of Israeli football from continental club and international tournaments.

Basis of the Proposed Suspension

The resolution, that had been proposed by Irish side Bohemians, highlighted claimed breaches by the IFA of two important Uefa statutes.

  • Inability to implement and enforce an effective anti-racism policy.
  • Establishment of football teams in disputed territories lacking the approval of the Palestrian FA.

Vote Outcome and Future Actions

As stated in an official statement from the Irish FA, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and two not voting.

They plans to officially present this request to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.

During a special assembly of the Football Association of Ireland, an standard motion was posed to members. It was approved by a majority.

Earlier Uefa Considerations

Uefa had earlier put on hold intentions to exclude Israeli football at the end of September, following the revealing of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the area.

Although Uefa never publicly stated contemplating an extraordinary meeting on the matter, preparations were understood to be well developed.

International Context

The FAI move follows comparable demands in September from the leaders of Turkish and Norwegian governing bodies for banning Israel from international competition.

These appeals were issued after United Nations experts asked world and European football bodies to suspend the Israeli FA, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed Israel of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.

Israel has denied these claims and described the report as outrageous.

Potential Ramifications

Should European football's authority choose to ban Israel, it would likely strain relations with the United States government – co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which strongly opposes such an measure.

Although Uefa has the authority to suspend Israel or its clubs from its tournaments, it may not be able to prevent them from competing in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by world football's governing body.
