Doris Makes Ireland Team While McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.
Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are not included because of fitness concerns, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery following the summer tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".
Following playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains available, with the two players set to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with the coach opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of centre choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at full-back.
Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.
Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris if the captain fails to recover fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
